PAPER COMPOSITIONS

Graphic Design, Collage | October 2020

For ART 132: Introduction to Graphic Design, we were assigned to create a series of paper compositions throughout the semester using only paper, scissors, and glue.

These assignments were challenging because the compositions had to be handmade. Without the use of digital design programs, the process was time and labor-intensive. Cutting, pasting, duplication, placement, alignment, undos, and redos couldn't be accomplished with the click of a button. However, this allowed me to truly explore and learn what exactly design is; it helped me better understand the process, going from ideation, to conceptualization, to testing, to development, to iteration, to feedback, and possibly (most likely) back to iteration.

Averaging about 6 hours on each piece, I was really able to connect with my work and master the core principles of graphic design: contrast, balance, repetition, rhythm, negative space, and hierarchy, among others.
